#355 – Backup Dad: Wisdom Works

Previously… I’m not the eye Odin sacrificed to the Well of Wisdom seeking revenge on your entire family and I’m your new backup dad while Odin is away. Yay! I’m gonna keep Frigg from permanently scarring you for life while she’s having crazy flashes. Yay! And I’ll do the shopping. Yay! Kinda. Yay? And keep your mom distracted for hours. Yay! Unfortunately, not the way your dad does. Yay! Sigh. Yay?

Currently… On a camping trip in a backyard fortress built by Odineye and the kids, the fortress is infiltrated by Hel and the Valkyries. Hel is after Odineye for back wages from her teaching stint at a school for monsters Odineye used to run. This (of course) led to a duel to the death won by our villainous eyeball. Now, he squares off against the wrath of Hod

I’m thinking that making Hod go emo is quite possibly a worse idea then simply allowing Hod to kill him. Hod just seems the sort of being who would become more powerful by being put in an emo state, and I think such a plan will come back to bite Odineye on the….well it will backfire horribly.

I just wonder how a 7 year old understands the concept of “emo” :P

    • Rayna says:

Hod’s not seven. First of all, being immortal makes aging flexible. Secondly, Hod is Balder’s twin, and there’s no way a seven year old could have won the beauty contest in the Pantheon Games.

      • ramdonperson says:

I think he’s referring to the “story concept: Eschele (age 7) part” Also, poor Hod, I don’t want him to lose!

    • Well, Eschele’s not writing the story… she just came up with the concept behind it. She did however develop Odineye’s ultimate weapon for this storyline. It was fun trying to figure out a way to work it into the story.

I notice one of the emo elves is named Fod. I suppose the other two are Sod and Dod?

  4. Ben says:

    Yes! Odineye with the psych-ops!
(I’m sorry folks, they just happen.)

  5. G Johnson says:

    Poor Hod.

  6. sprotte says:

    Can’t wait for popcorn time.

    • Yep, I was so eager for “Popcorn Time” I accidentally put it as the teaser for the last comic (but it was supposed to be for this one). We’ll really be getting to it next week.

  7. Ithil says:

I’m not entirely sure adding emo angst to Hod’s anger is a good idea…

Oh well, Odineye is the one that’ll get the beating no matter who is giving said beating.

  8. Patricia says:

Poor Hod! Not only having his love killed, but having to doubt his own intentions. I hope one of his brothers can stand up for him when he’s not able to.

  9. Teri says:

    I so hate Odineye.

He’s too smug and confident, something has to nail that SOB and I DO hope it’s Hod. Or Thor. Yeah, Thor would work too.

Did I mention that I really hate Odineye?

    • It’s good to see someone not empathizing with our villain. People were beginning to root for him for a little while in this story.

      • Teri says:

        I definitely wasn’t one of them. :P

        • J C Rouille says:

Oooh…but both OE and our Hodikins have sooo much in common – their dark sides… being under appreciated, especially by all-father Odin…their dark natures…their ability to rise above their limitations…deviousness…appreciation of Beauty…intellectual superiority…did I mention the touch of evil they both have in their core of being…and of course their chief complementary nature…Hod is blind and OE is…wait for it…wait for it…an EYE.

          • Teri says:

Newp, sorry, still not feeling the Odineye love.

Even if he has some things in common with Hod, a character I really do love, but there is no love in my cold, cruel, little, black heart for Odineye. If it were me, I would have stepped on him and smooshed him ages ago.

poor poor Hod. also, your comic never ceases to make me smile. =) thanks for the good work!

  11. Jasta says:

Heh… remember what happened in the poetry contest when Hod got stage fright and all his dark powers went out of control?

I’m betting all Hel will break loose (pun SO intended!) when his inner Emo lets go…. he’s hafl a breath from breakdown now as it is. And I’m betting his gal is waiting Down Below already with his reward…. *makes popcorn and sits back, grinning*

    *cuddles Hod VERY VERY carefully….*

  12. Jasta says:

BTW, anyone else think the middle emo avatar looks like a black-haired Balder? Hmmm… :)

  13. John K. says:

I love the last panel, and the color pallet through out the comic!
